Its been a busy few weeks for everyone - roll on Tuesday and here is to everyone having a great fun filled time!! Be prepared and have everything with u - u can take a few euro with u for sweets and stuff if u like but all meals is provided. TY school mobile will be in use Parents/Guardians have the number. Printing - my printer - use it wisely

As stated before u can print things in my office as a last resort - u have computers once a week - computers at home - in towns - libraries etc - I do not mind u using my printer if u are stuck but there has been people in the last week using it just because it is a handy option - if this continues I will stop the use of the printer all together - u are not allowed to come to me on the day work is due in to print things off - that is just asking for trouble - u have to be more prepared -  please bear these things in mind so that the printer will remain in use for everyone - if u have tried every option and there are none left then u can come to me - I have no problem with that.

I am not being awkward - my printer was not made for the printing it has been doing and some people have printed off things and not even bothered to come back and collect them so because of these things I have to tighten up on the printing side of things - hope u understand - please use the printer wisely for everyone's sake

Important important please read

In terms of work and things I know that I have been getting on to u a lot in the last few weeks - that is because teachers have been getting on to me about students and it is my job to keep u on your toes. Believe u me I do not want to be giving out all the time (I feel that I have done nothing but give out the last few weeks - again sorry to those who I may have been short or sharp with) about work and getting work in but I have just got the impression from some that the work is not going as well as it should be going - I will once again point out at this stage that a large majority of students are getting the work in on time and getting everything done - well done on that - it does not go on unnoticed! But some most certainly have to improve.

To prove my theory - in one PE class of 24 - 8 people have got a strike due to work being handed in late - this is not on and is very slack on your part - 4 others in another class have got a strike and then there are two others who have handed in no work at all in PE - enough said!

This has now resulted in a number of students in TY on 3 strikes - very close to 4 strikes!! Pressure on u that is for sure!!!!

I gave u 3 months to complete the work - it was simple / so easy to get a 1 grade in PE - very disappointing the amount of students who failed to hand in photos, who failed to complete the work on time, who failed to do the required amount, and very disappointing the way some people handed up their work in terms of presentation - it was very obvious people did not read what was required from them - u had a computer class once a week to do this - u have to learn your lesson - on the other hand some people handed in great pieces of work - well over and beyond what was required from them - well done.

I need to see the following students for different reasons first thing in the morning - Chantelle McBride, Nicole Heraghty, Andrea Brear and Charlotte King

My two PE classes - N Odhran and N Orla - I think one of your classes is going away tomorrow - if u are the class that is going away I need someone to take it upon themselves and collect the signing sheets during registration (all of them) and hand these to me before u go and u must collect them at the end of the day when u come back - this must be done - do not forget

Students not going to Carlingford - I am very disappointed that u are missing the trip. U are not required to come to school and u will be marked absent for the 3 days.

Assembly today and other things - take note

Know that it was very rushed today and I prob went through too much stuff but I plan to do it on a monthly basis from now on so hopefully there will be less stuff to go through

I know that I might have been a bit short/sharp with some during the assembly! Sorry about that - was just under a bit of pressure because I knew that u needed to be out of there - and I was trying to get through as much stuff as I could

U made some valuable points and I will see what I can do about them - thanks

Adam and Charlotte - in connection with PE work - I need a printed out copy asap if u have not already given me one

A lot of confusion - all work must be completed by the end of Nov - which is Saturday  - now just to let u know that due to Carlingford next week I will def not get a chance to look at them - On the week starting the 9th Dec u will have to be ready to go at this stage with your portfolio and scrap book - please bear in mind that there is no way that I will see every student before Christmas - it will depend on when the reports go out - they are due in next week - I can not sit down with u until after the reports go home as one of the things I will do is go through your report with u and my hands are tied until the reports go out in the post.
Please note!!!!!!!!!! Remember its only half way through the year
U do not need your portfolio finished - although u need to have all signatures completed for Xmas
U do not need to have your scrap book completed - as long as u have it started and made a good effort at it

PE class - have good warm PE gear with u
We will all meet in PE Hall tomorrow at 150 - simply to get details on the Carlingford trip - bus leaving at 8 in the morning next Tuesday - not back til 530 or so on the Thursday - please pass this on to everybody at home so they know - its your responsibility

Any student - boy or girl - who wants to play in an indoor 5 a side competition please get your name to  myself asap - last few days for this - want to see loads involved

Thanks - and keep up the great work

Very important - pass the word

Due to our evaluations and due to my worry over SOME students in TY not attending enough - remember u are only at school 4 days a week - I am starting something new from tomorrow morning!

From now until Christmas we are gonna have a wee class competition - the class with the best attendance record (which will also take into account lates and signing out) will receive a class prize - this will be in the form of an afternoon out of school - paid for by the school - this means that everyone has a role to play - so if at all possible and I know on an odd occasion it can not be helped - be in all the time, be in on time, get appointments after 4pm and don't be signing out and do your best for your class

I do know that most people have a very good record but my job is to make sure that the others (who do not have such a good record) improve their records of attendance - its worth a try so we will see how it goes - it starts tomorrow morning!

Best of luck to everyone!

Youth conference email - not a school trip

Please find some information on the Youth conference - PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A SCHOOL ACTIVITY - I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO MAKE TY STUDENTS AWARE OF THIS INFO - ITS UP TO U AFTER THIS - THE TRIP IS NOT ORGANISED BY THE SCHOOL AND THEREFORE THE SCHOOL HAVE NO PART TO PLAY IN THE WEEKEND AT ALL - ANYTHING U ORG OR DO IS TOTALLY DOWN TO U AND YOUR FAMILY

Dear Principal/T.Y. Co-ordinator,

The European Youth Parliament Ireland is delighted to extend the invitation for your school to participate in this year's regional session, which will take place in Galway city from November 29th to December 1st. The session venues will be a secondary school and NUI Galway. Accomodation will be in Snoozle's Hostel, which is perfectly located near the train and bus station. The theme of the session will be Mental Health and we shall have speakers who are experts in this field that will attend the session.

The European Youth Parliament (EYP) is a unique forum designed to actively engage young people in the moulding of their future society. EYP Ireland runs four  regional sessions each year, culminating in the annual national session where 4th and 5th year students from secondary schools all over Ireland will have the opportunity to debate topics relating to the future of the EU. Some students have the opportunity to represent Ireland all across Europe from places as diverse as Istanbul and Amsterdam.
Each session involves three parts; the first is team building where each delegate meets the other delegates in their committee and spends some time getting to know their fellow delegates and working on practical problem solving games as a group. The aim of team building is to allow the delegates of the committee who have never met before work together in a coherent way during the rest of the session. The second part of the session is committee work, where each of the ten committees discuss a set topic and agree on a motion for a resolution. The final part of the weekend is General Assembly, where all the committees come together to defend, debate and vote on each of the committee motions. Our sessions have been rated amongst the best youth conferences in Ireland. The attached booklet describes our sessions in more detail.
We would like to invite five students from your school to participate. The cost for participating is fifty euros per student. Due to budget reasons, we cannot host students from Galway city or county for the nights at our accommodation venue, however if there is a problem with this please feel free to get in contact with me. School rules apply during the session and the students will be supervised at all times. Once the delegates have registered, I will be getting in touch with them by email to give them more instructions and to help them choose their topics which they will be debating at the session. We are not looking primarily for experienced debaters, many of the students that participate have never debated before and have only a passing interest in politics, so anyone is welcome. To register, the students must click this link and sign up: https://docs.google.com/a/tcd.ie/forms/d/1n0Dl13aQa0vfHUHV4CAVVbbplTSB9NFcUNLT1FjiqIA/viewform
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Kieran McNulty.

A number of things - please read - very important

Can I ask all the students who completed the evaluations (the 8 students - 2 from each class) to see me in the morning before reg - thanks

Anyone who has evaluations please get this in tomorrow - no more excuses

People who owe me money please get this in as well - there are people who still owe money from Lough Salt trip - its that long ago now but it is the principal of the thing - get it in tomorrow

Can Anna, Sharon, Kerri McElhinney and Caomhnait please call to me as well in the morning

I also need to see Adam, Kyle, and Stephen

PE for tomorrow - we are encouraging people ro run the route or walk it so be prepared and take appropriate PE gear taking into account the conditions

If there are any students who are in class and have very little or no work to do - please come and see me - I just have a wee bit of work to do for this Carlingford trip so I want to get this sorted and sent away

PE work - due in - next week - no excuses - u will get a strike if a day late - two classes are due in on tuesday and two classes are due in on thur - please hand this to the teacher who calls your roll - do not hand this to anyone else - that is very important - make sure your name and class is on it

Remember the dementia donegal talk that u attended in the school - well there is a follow up on next tuesday - in Ballyshannon - and all TYs are going - in full school uniform - we will not be leaving until 11am - however the problem is that we will not be back until 530approx - so u will have to org lifts - there will be a charge of 2 each for the bus and u will need this money on Monday - please do not forget the money - i will come to u on Monday and collect - no excuses/stories - all students are required to go  - this is a short play highlighting the problem so hopefully this will be good - no cost for the play - money is a contribution for the bus.In class as normal until 11

Important - please please read and take note - Youth Conference/Carlingford/PE/Money/Evaluations/well done

I have more information on that youth conference that I was on about - please come to me on Monday and I will let u read the email - there is a cost of 50 euro - its run in Galway - and its over a weekend - I have just been asked to give u the info - thanks

Carlingford - forms and money have to be in on Monday - no excuses - unless u have spoken to me - u must have a permission slip and the money - I have to say I got very annoyed yesterday with some people who didn't have the permission slip - some also lost it - (if I photocopy something and give it to u and u loose it - don't expect a very nice response from me when u come near me - rem I have 96 copies of everything to do) - if u keep checking the blog u will have all the info - in fairness I gave u about 5 weeks notice - there is a lot to organise and i need u to do your bit (obviously like always there is only a minority) - most of u were excellent as always - please get this sorted on Monday

Well done to the group that had the talk on Tuesday here at school - the presenter was very well impressed by you in terms of manners, respect and contribution - great to hear - I want to hear more of this!!!!!

PE - there are still people who owe money from the mountain climb of Lough salt - 1 euro - debts have to be paid - make sure u have it in PE next week

PE - I know that on both days in PE - I had to speak to students about their contribution in class - we are going to be at school next week for PE - please bring LOADS OF WARM CLOTHES AS U MAY BE OUTSIDE - have gear for inside as well - report to the Sports hall at 150 on both days - if I have to speak to u next week about your participation then we will be staying at school for longer than I had intended - its up to u - remember 100% in everything and I am just trying to keep the cost down for you as well - u were told at the start of the year that u will be at school for some activities so I do not like to hear any complaints - please just get on with it  - that's a very general comment aimed at everyone as I feel that a lot of people this week did not put in the required effort - its not like u so I do not want a repeat - thanks

Evaluation booklets - these have to be in on Monday as I need to get these evaluations completed - give to your class tutor

U are a very good group - please show this at all times
I know some wanted me to look at this Ireland game next week but unfortunately I am away - I will try and work on something else

PE Work - remember

PE Work for Christmas and Summer

One page at least typed (full page of typing) on computer on your experiences in PE in TY to date. List the activities, describe the activities and give some reasons on what you liked and what you disliked (if any). Give some information on what you did and where you went. Give as much information as possible. Name your favourite activity and put in photographs (see important point below). Anything different will get you more marks. Include something that stands out. Make it interesting to read. Make it a personal account (include any funny stories) – what did you get out of it? Did you like it? Include Bundoran/Gartan and Celtic trips. The more you include the better. It is important to note that participation will play an important part in your grade in PE. Please put your name on your work and staple or put in a plastic envelope. Read over your work and remember to do a spell check.
Grading system in TY is as follows:
1 = Excellent                2 = Very Good 3 = Good                     4 = Fair                        5 = Poor
Points:
  • Work not typed = down a grade
  • Poor participation in PE = down a grade (miss 4 classes = down one grade, miss 5 classes = down two grades, miss 6 classes down 3 grades and miss more than 6 classes = Poor (Being excused counts as missing PE). If you miss any of the main activities you may be marked down. This will be marked on your report.
  • Short = down a grade (one page typed – We will make a decision on this!)
  • Effort not good enough in PE = down a grade (not good enough just to have your gear – you must put in the effort as well)
  • Behaviour not good in PE – down a grade
  • No Photographs – down a grade – photos must include yourself taking part in one of the activities
If you forget your gear (I’m sure there will be no-one!) then this counts as a missed class . . . even though you will be taking part in your uniform!
1st Piece of work is from Summer to Christmas and 2nd piece is from Christmas to Summer

Date that it has to be handed in at Christmas - Tuesday PE class = Tuesday 26th November and Thursday PE class = Thursday 28th November 2013
Date that it has to be handed in at Summer - Tuesday PE class = Tuesday 29th April and Thursday PE class = Thursday 1st May

Late work will be marked down – no excuses – you have plenty of notice!
If you do not happen to be in for some reason please email to me mrdohertyloretoschool@yahoo.ie making sure that it arrives on time (by 3.45pm on the day it is due) Please note YOU CAN ONLY EMAIL IT IF YOU ARE NOT AT SCHOOL ON THAT DAY. Please make sure that you have the work saved using the correct format (Microsoft Word 2003) if you intend to print it at school. There is a way of doing this using emails – please just ask!

1 day late = Down 1 grade  2 days late = down 2 grades  3 days late = down 3 grades.  After 3 days it will not be marked Note – Weekend counts as 1 day and long weekend counts as 2 days – If the school is open that counts as a day. Only a doctor’s note will excuse you. This must be handed in on the first day back at school. We will then work out a suitable schedule for the work to be handed in.

It is easy to get a good mark in PE. Have your gear, try your best, enjoy the experiences and have a go at everything – no excuses!!! And produce your work when it is due in. We will try to make PE as interesting as possible and we will try to include as many different activities as possible but it is important that we work together on it.
Enjoy the year and best of luck

Please note to do with absent/lates

This is very important to take note of - at the end of the year u will get marked down at the interview stage - I did this last year and it worked very well and I am going to do it again this year - so if u are late/absent a lot u will get marked down a certain number of marks - this could be the difference between a distinction and a merit or the difference for example between a pass/fail - this is only fair I believe beacuse this system rewards the students who are in all the time and marks the students down who miss a lot of school or who are late on a regular basis. It is important to note this system only comes into effect for students who are absent/late on a regular basis

Dementia

Well done in the talk on Monday - the man spoke highly of u - thats the way it should be - so well done - keep this up - some more facts are laid out below - if u would like any more info on this topic - please see me as I have loads and loads of info that I can give u - please just come and ask - maybe u might like to do a project on it and maybe u might like to raise awareness in the community of this area - any ideas u have please come to me with them - thanks

Dementia – Everything You wanted to Know but forgot to ask.
‘Alzheimer’s’ and ‘dementia’ what’s the difference? Just as leukaemia (bone cancer) is a form of cancer, so Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia.
What is dementia? Dementia is a progressive illness of the brain where brain cells die causing the person with the illness to lose the ability to remember, to retain knowledge and skills, to make appropriate decisions and to look after themselves.
What are the two kinds? Senile dementia is caused by small blood vessels in the brain bursting and the cells that are deprived of blood flow die – this generally effects older people. Dementia caused by disease (mainly Alzheimer’s but there are others) happens when a plaque (like you would fell by rubbing your tongue on your unbrushed teeth) forms on brain cells and kills them – this can effect people at all ages – some as young as their 40s.
How does memory work? Brain cells send messages to each other by producing a substance called acetylcholine – this links thoughts in your head (to match a name to a face or a voice) like files in a filing cabinet or on a computer drive. Dead cells cannot produce the acetylcholine to make the memory links.
What can some drugs stop dementia? No drugs stop dementia – but they can slow it down if dementia is diagnosed early enough. The drugs help the brain to re-use the acetylcholine still in the brain – like re-using a tea bag to make a second or third cup of tea. But, eventually, the tea-bag will not be making tea anymore.
How many people are affected by dementia? One in every twenty people [5%] over 65 get dementia, rising to one in five [20%] over 80. This means that over 2,000 people live with dementia in Donegal (out of 44,000 in the Republic of Ireland) – but that will rise to 5,000 by 2035 (out of 100,000 nationally) because people are living longer and there are more older people. About 10% of all cases are people with ‘early-onset’ dementia – that is under 65 years of age – so that is 200 people in Donegal. The youngest person diagnosed in Donegal was 38 years old.
What is like to have dementia? Imagine if you were unable to answer most or all of the questions put to you each day – not just difficult ones but whether you wanted tea or coffee, or if you were warm or cold. Imagine the frustration of knowing what you want to say but being unable to find the word – imagine your annoyance if people constantly finished your sentences for you. Imagine your embarrassment at not being able to put a name to a face, or the loneliness of feeling you have no friends or family (because you can’t remember them) and on being dependent on someone to help you do the simplest tasks.
What can a person with dementia NOT DO? As the illness progresses, difficulty with memory mean that people with dementia cannot look after their financial affairs, drive, make meals and perform toileting tasks. Most people become doubly incontinent.
What can a person with dementia DO? People with dementia can still recall events from way back (even if they are confused about the facts). They can still remember songs from their youth. They can recognise someone who cares for them (even if they don’t remember the name or relationship).  And most importantly, they can still LOVE and BE LOVED.

Rubbish on bus!!!!!!!!!!!

Rubbish on the bus yesterday - people on to me about it - come on guys - come on - this is small stuff - that I should not have to deal with - but if someone complains to me about it - then I am gonna complain to u about it -

Not impressed!!!

Well done to the classes who were away in Letterkenny yesterday - I hope that u enjoyed and I hope that u got something out of the experience - one point - if u are given food and I think that it was great that we got lunch provided - please only take one helping of food unless u are allowed to take more - a number of the boys went back up and as a result the hotel ran out of food - not on - please do not do it again - reflects very badly on the school and the rest of the students

On anothor note - there was a guest speaker here on Wednesday and he was not at all impressed with a bit of jeering and laughing going on - again this reflects very badly and this will have implications for your class and TY as a whole - respect people who come in and give their time - two classes mentioned - N Orla and N Oisin

I gave another strike out yesterday for not regurlarly checking the blog and as a result the student did not know what was going on in TY - again u have all been warned - the way things are going - someone is going to miss a trip soon and there is plenty coming up - if u are working, behaving yourself and getting on with things u have nothing to worry about - if u are not doing these things then u do have something to worry about - I am not gonna let anyone spoil TY - if u have any concerns please come and speak to me - concerns about anything - money, other students, work - anything - please speak to me - thanks

I want everyone to enjoy the year and to be respectful at all times both to teachers in the school and to guest speakers - it is important to note that I am very aware that it is only a few people playing up a bit - the rest of the students are excellent - but the few can spoil it for everyone and no one wants that

Build a Bank / PE

Well done to all 8 who were interviewed for build a bank yesterday - I got great reports about all of u and there was nothing in it between all of you and it was difficult for them to make a decision - I hope that the two not chosen take up the offer of helping out as i think that it will be good for u - it will be a good experience and I know that u were made aware what will happen at the competition so that u know from the start - I hope that u are not too disappointed - again well done to all - u all represented the school very well

Well done in PE yesterday - photos on photbucket - hopefully u enjoyed - it was somthing different - most people got to the top so well done - we will hopefully do some more of this in preparation for errigal later in year

Negative points

A few people are very close to getting strikes due to small things that I am getting fed up checking - such as uniforms / ties etc and also landing into school late - I am also getting fed up asking people about checking the blog so I have told some students that if I ask them and they do not know about the most recent msgs - then they are going to get a strike - again - I am fed up asking about these small things - if u are not checking the blog then u are not keeping up with the latest things in TY - u have all been warned - I do not want to give out strikes for small things but if I have to then I will

Good luck over the weekend and we will see u on Monday at 9.03

Last call for names - some people have told me that they have read the msg on the blog with regard to the coaching certificate and they do not understand it - I have read it again - a lot of information - yes - but I believe that it is pretty straight forward aswell - basically a 2 day coaching course in Ladies gaelic football - u will end up maybe coaching some primary school girls - great for your cv - boys and girls can apply - cost is 10 euro - I will collect this later in the year - this will not be held until Jan 2014 - just have to book it now

Thanks

TY is about what u put in - not sure whats going on but people need to start putting themselves forward for things and getting involved in things

Photobucket page

Photobucket is now up and running

go to photobucket.com
username is loretoty2013
password - loreto2013

please note that due to restricted space on this photobucket page we will have to delete photos every month in order to put up new ones so u have a month or so to do anything u need to do with these pictures - for example - scrap book, portfolio etc - after that the photos that are up the longest will be deleted

There is currently about 80 photos up there now - surfing and induction day - if u have any others please bring these to me and I will put them up - we rely on the students aswell so please take pictures and give them to us and we will put them up on photobucket

Carlingford

As u are now all aware we are going to carlingford adventure centre from the 3rd dec until the 5th dec - u can check out their website! Everyone is required to go so please keep these dates free - please make sure that u get all your work handed in as all the work must be completed by the end of November - I do not want to be in a position where I have to stop someone from going to Carlingford beacause they did not do their work - I want everyone to go as this trip is normally one of the highlights of the year

Now to the not so nice side of it - between buses and the adventure centre - it is costing the school just over 100 euro per student - we are asking that the students pay half (50 euro) and the school will pay the rest which is over 50 euro - I think that is a fair enough deal taking everything into consideration. I will be looking to collect this money by the start of November - so I am giving you about 5 weeks notice - once again like any trip - if there is an issue with money please see me and I will do my best for you

Many thanks and enjoy the weekend

Portfolio's and scrap books

I have now left 2 portfolio's and two scrap books in room 306 and in the multi media room - where u all have computers - these are from last year and they are very good examples of what is required - they give u an idea and u should take time during your computer classes to look at these - they are a very high standard and it is the kind of standard that I expect - please look after these and keep them safe and leave them back the way u found them

Many thanks

Important msgs - please read and get sorted!!

Surfing money must be in at the start of the week - please have this organised as we have to pay the instructors

Build a Bank - very poor response - extended closing date is now Monday - please have them in by then - we have to get this up and running

Gaelic coaching certificate - if u are unsure please read previous blogs - again very poor response - if u would like your name down please see me asap

Again I am hearing a lot of positive things so please keep this up - well done
Any time that I have taken a group out of the school I have been very impressed - thats great to see - again well done

However I do believe that a number of people are not checking this blog on a regular basis (thats why people are not applying for things - well at least I hope thats the reason!!!!!!) - the idea of this blog is that you know what is going on all the time - please make sure that u check this otherwise u are gonna miss out on things
